As a wedding and couples photographer, I have seen a lot of proposals unfold in all kinds of ways. The ones that stand out are not necessarily the most elaborate. They are the ones that feel genuine and well considered!
What Matters Most
Start with what matters to both of you. Think about how your relationship has grown and what you both enjoy doing together. Are you more outdoorsy or homebodies? Do you love a quiet morning or a big moment? Your proposal should reflect that. If you are forcing something just because you saw it online, it will feel off!
Location
Location is one of the biggest decisions. Colorado gives you a lot to work with. Mountains, lakes, downtown areas, or even your own living room can all be the perfect setting. What matters is that the place has meaning or feels like a space where your partner can be fully present. If you are choosing an outdoor location, think about timing and lighting. Early morning or just before sunset will always give you the best light and a little more privacy.
The Timing
Timing matters more than people realize. Try to plan a moment where your partner is not rushed or distracted. If you are squeezing it into a packed day, it can take away from the experience. Build in space so you can both slow down and actually enjoy what is happening.
The Details
Think through the details, but keep it simple. Do you want friends or family nearby or do you want it to be just the two of you? Are you planning a celebration right after or keeping it private for a while? There is no right answer here, but having a plan will help everything feel smoother.
Hiring A Photographer
One thing I always recommend is considering photos. You do not need a full production, but having the moment documented can be really meaningful. If you hire a photographer, communicate clearly with them ahead of time. Share your plan, the exact location, and any cues they should look for. A good photographer will help guide you without making the moment feel staged!
Always Have A Backup Plan
Also, have a backup plan. Colorado weather can change quickly, and even the best laid plans sometimes need to shift. Knowing your alternative ahead of time will save you stress if something unexpected comes up.
When it comes to what you say, keep it real. You do not need a long speech. Just speak from your own experience and your own voice. That is what your partner will remember. At the end of the day, the perfect proposal is not about perfection. It is about intention, effort, and creating a moment that feels like you!!
