One of the first questions I get asked as an engagement photographer in Colorado is: “What should we wear?”
It’s totally understandable, choosing outfits can feel overwhelming when you want to look your best but still feel like yourself. The good news? There are a few color palettes that always photograph beautifully, no matter where your session takes place! Ready to find out? Keep on scrolling for more…

Earthy Neutrals
You can never go wrong with warm, natural tones like cream, beige, tan, olive, and muted brown. They blend effortlessly with desert style backdrops, fields, and mountains while keeping the focus on your connection. These colors photograph soft, warm, and timeless.

Coastal Blues & Soft Gray
If your engagement session takes place near the water or river (or you just love a calm, coastal feel), this palette is perfect. Light blue, gray, and sand tones capture that relaxed, natural vibe without being too bold.

Warm Tones for Golden Hour
Rust, beige, terracotta, and deep burgundy look incredible against golden light. They make your photos feel cozy and rich, adding just the right amount of depth without stealing the show.

Soft Pastels
Blush pink, sage green, and powder blue photograph beautifully in spring and summer sessions. They’re romantic and soft! There’s just something about pastels that brings out a playful, effortless vibe. Whether we’re running through wildflowers, walking along the water, or spinning around downtown, these shades catch the light in the best way. Plus, they flatter every skin tone and look amazing next to natural backdrops (bonus points if there’s greenery or sunset light involved).

Classic Black & White
This one is my favorite. Black and white always look amazing, especially for city sessions or moody mountain evenings. They’re timeless choices that never clash with the surroundings and give your gallery that editorial edge!
A Few Extra Tips
- Coordinate, don’t match. Choose colors that complement each other rather than being identical.
- Add texture. Fabrics like linen, lace, or knits photograph beautifully and add depth.
- Avoid bright neons and busy patterns. They can distract from your natural glow and the scenery.
- Most importantly, be comfortable! When you feel good in what you’re wearing, it always shows.
At the end of the day, the best outfits are the ones that feel true to who you are. If you’re ever unsure, I’m always happy to help you plan your wardrobe before your session, styling is part of the fun!
